Friuli-Venezia Giulia
[free-OO-lee veh-NEHT-zee-ah JOO-leeah]

Wine-producing region located in the northeast corner of Italy, with the former Yugoslavia to the east and Austria to the north. There are just over 45,000 vineyard acres, nine DOCs, and one DOCG (RAMANDOLO) here. DOC wines comprise about 60 percent of this region’s total production, which is one of the highest ratios of Italy’s twenty winegrowing regions. The most important DOCs in Friuli-Venezia Giulia are COLLIO, COLLI ORIENTALI DEL FRIULI, and GRAVE DEL FRIULI; the others are Annia, AQUILEIA, Carso, ISONZO, LATISANA, and LISON-PRAMAGGIORE (shared with VENETO). A wide variety of different grapes are grown in the region including many nonlocal varieties including CABERNET FRANC, CABERNET SAUVIGNON, MERLOT, Pinot Nero (PINOT NOIR), and CHARDONNAY. White wine DOC production now dominates red wines by two to one. TOCAI is the most populous white grape, but there are many other varieties including Chardonnay, MALVASIA, Pinot Bianco (PINOT BLANC), Pinot Grigio (PINOT GRIS), RIBOLLA, and SAUVIGNON BLANC.
