Furmint
[FOOR-mint]

White-wine grape most renowned for its contribution to the delicious, sweet wines of Hungary’s TOKAY region. Furmint’s thin skin makes it susceptible to BOTRYTIS CINEREA, which causes the famous shriveled ASZÚ berries with their concentrated sugars and flavors. The combination of Furmint and HÁRSLEVELÜ creates the rich sweet Tokay wines that rival—and sometimes surpass—the sweet wines from France’s SAUTERNES region. Furmint is also VINIFIED into a strong, high-ALCOHOL, high-ACID, DRY wine, which is widely available throughout Hungary and the rest of eastern Europe. This variety is grown in Hungary and nearby countries. It’s thought that Sipon and Posip, grown in the former Yugoslavia, are actually Furmint. Tokay d’Alsace (PINOT GRIS) and the Italian variety TOCAI are not related to Furmint.
