Aquileia DOC
[ah-kwee-LAY-ah]

A DOC area located in the southern part of the FRIULI-VENEZIA GIULIA region in northeastern Italy. The
DOC covers a ROSATO plus thirteen different VARIETAL WINES, which must contain at least 90 percent of the main grape variety. The varietal wines are Cabernet (from CABERNET SAUVIGNON and CABERNET FRANC), Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, CHARDONNAY, MERLOT, Pinot Bianco (PINOT BLANC), Pinot Grigio (PINOT GRIS), Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso (REFOSCO), Riesling Renano (RIESLING), Sauvignon (SAUVIGNON BLANC), TOCAI FRIULANO, Traminer Aromatico (GEWÜRZTRAMINER), and VERDUZZO FRIULANO. The Rosato is mainly Merlot but can include up to 30 percent of some of the other approved red grapes. Most Aquileia wines have a light to medium BODY and should be drunk fairly young.
