Bandol AC
[bahn-DAWL]

An APPELLATION for red, white, and ROSÉ wines that covers the area around the resort town of Bandol, located between Marseille and Toulon on the Mediterranean coast in France’s Provence region. The MOURVÈDRE variety is the principal component (comprising at least 50 percent) in the BANDOL red and rosé wines, with GRENACHE, CINSAUT, and SYRAH generally used in the blend. The red wines, which are considered some of the best in Provence, must be AGED in wood for at least 18 months and can handle extensive BOTTLE AGING (10 years or so). The white wines, made from CLAIRETTE, UGNI BLANC, BOURBOULENC, and SAUVIGNON BLANC, are rather neutral in character and account for only about 5 percent of the total wine production.
