bastard

A sweet wine of uncertain origin that was popular in England during the sixteenth century. It’s thought to have come from either Spain, Portugal, or the Portuguese island of MADEIRA. The wine is said to have been made from the Bastardo grape (hence the name), which is still grown in parts of Portugal.
