BATF; ATF
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (BATF or ATF) is an agency within the U.S. Justice Department with responsibilities for firearms, explosives, arson, and criminal enforcement. Until the latter part of 2002, when the Homeland Security Act of 2002 was passed, BATF was also responsible for alcohol-related legislation as part of the U.S. Treasury Department. The Homeland Security Act transferred the BATF (not yet renamed at this writing) to the Justice Department and left the alcohol-related responsibilities with the U.S. Treasury Department under the new TAX AND TRADE BUREAU.
