Bernkastel
[BEHRN-kah-stl]
The name Bernkastel applies to a town, a BEREICH, and as part of two GROSSLAGEN. The town is situated on the Mosel River in Germany’s MOSEL-SAAR-RUWER region and is noted for its narrow, picturesque streets. The town, which is also known as Bernkastel-Kues (Kues is the larger town across the river), is located near many important vineyard sites, including the world-famous DOCTOR vineyard. Bereich Bernkastel is one of the five Bereiche in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region and covers the vineyards around the middle portion of the Mosel River area, what’s often referred to as the Mittelmosel. The Bereich begins northeast of Trier and encompasses the area to the northeast, including Bernkastel-Kues, and ends just short of ZELL. Ten Grosslagen are included in the Bereich, including two that encompass vineyards around the town of Bernkastel. These two, which are entitled to add Bernkasteler in front of their name, are Bernkasteler Badstube and Bernkasteler Kurfürstlay.
