bitter rot

Recognized as a grape disease since 1887, bitter rot is caused by the fungus Melanconium fuligineaum. The name comes from the bitter taste of infected berries. Although bitter rot is often confused with BLACK ROT, the latter infects only green berries; bitter rot can affect young shoots, fruit cluster stems, and the fruit itself. The most obvious symptom of this fungus is a brownish, wet lesion on the grapes. Spraying with fungicides is the most commonly used form of control. See also DISEASES, VINEYARD.
