black rot

A fungal disease caused by the fungus Guignardia bidwellii that attacks both grapes and vines. Usually brought on by hot, extremely humid weather, black rot discolors leaves and stems and causes the grapes to shrivel and turn brownish-black, at which point they’re called “mummies.” Copper sulfate is the common treatment.
