A red-wine grape widely planted in Austria and in smaller amounts in Germany’s WÜRTTEMBERG region, where its called Blauer Limberger (also Limberger and Lemberger). Blaufränkisch, which buds early and ripens late, doesn’t do well in the colder climates. The wines it produces are lighter-styled reds, usually with plenty of ACIDITY. Blaufränkisch is known as Kékfrankos in Hungary, Franconia in the FRIULI-VENEZIA GIULIA of Italy, Frankovka in Slovakia, and Gamé in Bulgaria. It’s not, as is sometimes thought, the same variety as GAMAY.
