Calatayud DO
[kah-lah-tay-YOOD]

The largest DO in Spain’s Aragón region with about 19,000 acres of vineyards. It’s located in the north central part of the country northeast of Madrid around the city of Calatayud. The area is hot with low annual rainfall. Garnacha (GRENACHE), the principal red grape VARIETY, comprises nearly two thirds of the vineyards. Other reds include TEMPRANILLO, Monastrell (MOURVÈDRE), and Mazuelo (CARIGNAN). MALVASIA is the main white variety along with Garnacha Blanca (GRENACHE) and Moscatel (MUSCAT). Calatayud is best known for its ROSADO (ROSÉ) WINES but some smaller producers are starting to make decent full-bodied reds. Although CABERNET SAUVIGNON, SYRAH, and MERLOT grapes are planted, they’re not currently allowed in DO-labeled wines. Most wines are produced by the area COOPERATIVES.
