Winzergenossenschaft [vine-zer-geh-NAW-sehn-shahft] The literal translation of this German term is “wine grower association,” although it’s more generally known as a “cooperative cellar.” Wines sold by cooperative cellars can use the term ERZEUGERABFÜLLUNG—which has the same connotation as ESTATE BOTTLED—on labels. Although most of the better wines come from private estates, some of the winzergenossenschaft wines, particularly in Germany’s PFALZ and BADEN regions, can be quite good. Winzerverein (“wine grower society”) sometimes appears on labels and has the same meaning as Winzergenossenschaft. Related Links: Erzeugerabfullung, originalabfullung
