Worcester WO

A large demarcated wine district of SOUTH AFRICA that’s part of the Breede River Valley Region. It’s located about 70 miles northeast of Cape Town around the town of Worcester. This is a hot, dry area that requires irrigation from water supplied from the Breede River. With almost 44,000 planted acres, Worcester has just under 17 percent of the nation’s vineyard acreage. This high-yielding area is able to produce as much as 25 percent of South Africa’s total wine production, much of which ends up as FORTIFIED WINE or BRANDY. White varieties dominate here, with CHENIN BLANC (called Steen locally) taking up about 25 percent of all the vineyard area. Next comes Columbar (COLUMBARD), Hanepoot (MUSCAT), and CHARDONNAY. Red varieties, which take up less than one-third of the vineyards, are led by Shiraz (SYRAH), CABERNET SAUVIGNON, PINOTAGE, CINSAUT, and MERLOT.
