Wrattonbully
[RAT-tuhn-bul-lee]

A newly recognized Australian wine-producing region located about 200 miles southeast of Adelaide in SOUTH AUSTRALIA’S Limestone Coast Zone. It’s situated near the town of Naracoorte, between the better-known regions of PADTHAWAY and COONAWARRA. It lies in the foothills of the Naracoorte Ranges and has soil—terra rossa over limestone—similar to the famous Coonawarra region, just to the south. Its climate is warmer than Coonawarra but cooler than Padthaway. Viticultural development started in the late 1960s and early 1970s, but dramatic growth didn’t occur until the 1990s. There are about 3,300 acres planted in the Wrattonbully region. CABERNET SAUVIGNON and SHIRAZ are the primary VARIEITES followed by MERLOT, CHARDONNAY, SAUVIGNON BLANC, and PINOT NOIR. Before this region was officially named Wrattonbully, it was called by several different names including Naracoorte Ranges and Koppamurra.
