Canberra District

Australian wine region located in the Southern New South Wales Zone of NEW SOUTH WALES and situated around Canberra, the nation’s capital. However, most wineries are located outside the Australian Capital Territory (an area around Canberra set aside in the early 1900s for the new national capital), mainly to the north near Murrumbateman. The exception is Kamberra, a large BRL Hardy winery located near the Canberra racecourse. For the most part, this region is hot and dry, but the autumns are cool and sometimes rain-laden. The Canberra District comprises approximately 1,200 acres planted primarily with CHARDONNAY, RIESLING, SAUVIGNON BLANC, SHIRAZ, CABERNET SAUVIGNON, PINOT NOIR, and MERLOT.
