The wrapping that covers the cork and neck of a wine bottle. Historically, the favored material for capsules has been lead, but concerns over lead’s safety are the basis for its replacement. Current capsule alternatives are plastic, tin, aluminum, and laminates. Frequently a capsule is referred to as a foil because of its association with a metal covering. Robert Mondavi Winery has eliminated the traditional capsule and now uses a natural-paper and beeswax cap that’s attached directly to the cork—a few other wineries are using this as well.
