Veneto
[VEH-neh-toh]

A large wine-producing region in northeastern Italy. Its capital, Venice, sits on the Adriatic Sea. Directly west of Venice is this area’s other important city, Verona, which isn’t far from Lake Garda on this region’s western edge. Veneto has about 185,000 vineyard acres and is one of Italy’s top three or four regions in total wine production. It’s also the top producer of DOC-approved wines, with almost 19 percent of Italy’s total DOC production, although many would question how well this truly reflects the production of “quality” wine. The best-known wines are from the three DOCs of BARDOLINO, SOAVE, and VALPOLICELLA, all of which are located around Verona. This region has three DOCGs—BARDOLINO SUPERIORE, RECIOTO DI SOAVE, and SOAVE SUPERIORE. Its twenty-two DOC areas include BIANCO DI CUSTOZA, BREGANZE, COLLI BERICI, COLLI EUGANEI, GAMBELLARA, and LISON-PRAGAGGIORE (shared with FRIULI-VENEZIA GIULIA). Popular red grapes in the Veneto include CABERNET FRANC, CABERNET SAUVIGNON, CORVINA, MERLOT, Molinara, and Rondinella. Among the favored white grapes are CHARDONNAY, GARGANEGA, Pinot Bianco (PINOT BLANC), Pinot Grigio (PINOT GRIS), PROSECCO, and TREBBIANO.
