Vernaccia di Oristano
[ver-NAHT-chah dee aw-riss-TAH-noh]
1. A white-wine grape grown on the island of SARDINIA, primarily north of the city of Oristano. Vernaccia di Oristano grapes are processed much like those for sherry, producing good-quality, amber-colored wines reminiscent of DRY, aged Olorosos (see SHERRY). These wines are AGED in wood for a minimum of 2 years—3 years for SUPERIORE, and 4 years for RISERVA. Although not as distinctive, there are also LIQUOROSO (FORTIFIED) versions that are vinified both sweet and dry. Vernaccia di Oristano is not related to VERNACCIA DI SAN GIMIGNANO. 2. A DOC encompassing the city of Oristano and areas to the north of the city, which is located on the western side of Sardinia.
