Castile and León; Sp. Castilla y León
[kah-STEEL and lay-YON]

Spain’s largest autonomous region, which comprises just under 20 percent of the country’s land mass. It’s located in the north central part of the country north of Madrid. Castile and León encompasses eight provinces—Burgos, León, Palencia, Salamanca, Sergovia, Soria, Valladolid, and Zamora. It contains five DO areas—BIERZO, CIGALES, RIBERA DEL DUERO, RUEDA, and TORO. This region’s best known for the red wines from Ribera del Duero and the white wines from Rueda. Toro is a rising star here because of its shift from the traditional, dull, heavy red wines to powerful, fresh, fruity ones.
