Catarratto
[kah-tahr-RAHT-toh]

Although only grown in SICILY, this important white grape is Italy’s most cultivated white VARIETY, second only to SANGIOVESE. There are several related varieties including Catarratto Bianco Comune and Catarratto Bianco Lucido. Although much of the grape production is distilled (see DISTILLATION), it’s also approved for use in the BIANCO (white) wines of the Sicilian DOCs of ALCAMO, Contea di Sclafani, Contessa Entellina, ETNA, Menfi, Sambuca di Sicilia, Santa Margherita di Belice, and Sciacca.
