Villard Noir
[vee-yahr NWAHR]
Although once quite popular in France, this red French-American HYBRID is gradually being replaced by higher-quality red varieties at the encouragement of French authorities. Villard Noir, which is still planted in southwestern France, produces wines of medium to low quality. Much of the crop is now distilled (see DISTILLATION) into SPIRITS. Villard Noir, also known as Seyve Villard 18.315, can be found in the eastern United States as well.
