vino de mesa
[BEE-noh day MAY-sah]

Spanish for “TABLE WINE,” which is Spain’s lowest official category of wine. This term has a similar status to France’s VIN DE TABLE, Italy’s vino DA TAVOLA, and Germany’s TAFELWEIN. These wines do not qualify for the higher quality categories, VINO DE LA TIERRA or DENOMINACIÓN DE ORIGEN (DO). Occasionally a label may indicate “vino de mesa de—” followed by the name of a region or province. Nonconforming winemakers often use these categories for high-quality wines that don’t meet DO or vino de la tierra requirements, much in the same manner as Italian wine-makers do for their SUPER TUSCANS.
