Ticino
[tee-CHEE-noh]

This Italian-speaking Swiss canton is located in the southern Alps. There are four main wine-producing areas in Ticino—around Lake Lugano and Mendrisiotto and in the areas north and south of Monte Céneri, Sopraceneri, and Sottoceneri. Ticino produces mostly red wines, with MERLOT the dominant variety. These wines are usually labeled Merlot del Ticino. Lower-quality wines made from a mix of red grapes such as BARBERA and FREISA are often labeled Nostrano (Italian for “ours”). The word Nostrano was once used for VITIS VINIFERA grapes to set them apart from Americano grapes, the latter alluding to NATIVE AMERICAN vines used in this area after PHYLLOXERA wiped out most of the European varieties.
