Saint-Aubin AC
[san toh-BAN]

APPELLATION that consists of the vineyards surrounding the villages of Gamay (the village that gave its name to the grape variety) and Saint-Aubin. It’s located in the CÔTE DE BEAUNE section of France’s BURGUNDY region.  The Saint-Aubin AC sits between CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET AC and PULIGNY-MONTRACHET AC, wedged into a small valley higher up the hill. Although there are a fair amount of GAMAY grapes grown in this geographic area, only PINOT NOIR can go into this appellation’s red wines. Compared to many of the neighboring villages, Saint-Aubin AC reds are of a lighter, more elegant style. The white wines, which make up over half of the production, are considered better than the reds. There are twenty-nine PREMIER CRU vineyards that are allowed to append their names to the label. The better premier cru vineyards include Les Murgers des Dents de Chien and En Remilly. The best of these CHARDONNAY wines are often compared to good-quality Chassagne-Montrachet or MEURSAULT AC wines. The Saint-Aubin AC wines are regarded as relatively good values.
