Colares DOC
[kuh-LAH-rush]

A small DENOMINACÃO DE ORIGEM CONTROLADA (DOC) area located northwest of Lisbon on the Atlantic coast. The vineyards are situated on a sandy plateau where the vines must be planted deep into the clay subsoil below. Because of the sandy soil, the vines are free of PHYLLOXERA and, therefore, have never been grafted to a different rootstock. Colares is best known for its red wines, which are made primarily from the Ramisco grape blended with Molar, Parreira Matias, and PERIQUITA. The wines are generally TANNIC and full-bodied (see BODY) and require considerable AGING. A small amount of white wine is made from ARINTO, Galego Dourado, and MALVASIA.
