Saint Helena AVA

A California VITICULTURAL AREA established in 1995 in the northern part of the NAPA VALLEY AVA in and around the town of St. Helena. Its southeastern boundary aligns with the RUTHERFORD AVA along Zinfandel lane, and its northern boundary is set about halfway between the towns of Calistoga and St. Helena at Bale Lane running up into the foothills on each side. SPRING MOUNTAIN AVA runs along the northern two thirds of the Saint Helena AVA’s western flank. There are just over 9,000 acres in this area, a substantial portion of which are planted with vineyards—over 70 percent to BORDEAUX VARITIES. The Napa Valley climate becomes warmer as one moves northwest from the southeastern portion (nearest to San Pablo Bay). Therefore the Saint Helena AVA is warmer than the OAKVILLE KNOLL DISTRICT and the YOUNTVILLE AVAS. The Saint Helena area has a rich wine history—Charles Krug established the first winery in 1861, and the Beringer brothers started their winery in 1876. Today there are over thirty wineries in this APPELLATION.
