Saint-Julien AC
[san zhoo-LYAN]

Many people think that the Saint-Julien AC produces the most consistently high-quality wines of any APPELLATION in France’s BORDEAUX region. It’s the smallest of four main COMMUNES in the MÉDOC and is located just south of PAUILLAC.It contains eleven CRU CLASSÉ châteaux (which use about 75 percent of the available vineyard land) and a number of very good CRU BOURGEOIS châteaux. This leaves very little land for low-quality wine producers. Heading the list of cru classé CHÂTEAUX are Ducru-Beaucaillou, Gruaud-Larose, and Léoville-Las Cases—DEUXIÈMES CRUS (second growths). They’re followed by other excellent châteaux including Lagrange, Léoville-Barton, Léoville-Poyferré, and Talbot. CABERNET SAUVIGNON is the dominant grape, which is blended with CABERNET FRANC, MERLOT, and, occasionally, small amounts of PETIT VERDOT.
