San Francisco Bay AVA

Created in 1999, this large AVA encompasses approximately 1,566,000 acres in seven California counties—San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Cruz, and San Benito. All these counties except Santa Cruz and San Benito actually border on the bay, but portions of these two counties were included because of their long association with the San Francisco Bay area. This AVA is included in the larger CENTRAL COAST AVA, which was expanded to include areas not already encompassed by its boundaries. There are nearly 6,000 planted acres, most of which are in the smaller LIVERMORE VALLEY AVA that is now included in the San Francisco Bay AVA boundaries.
