Sangrantino
[sahn-grahn-TEE-noh]

Dark red grape variety found in the central part of Italy's UMBRIA region. It produces wines that are powerful, tannic, and fruity with hints of smoke and spice. Sangrantino isn't widely grown and is found mainly in the COMMUNES around Montefalco. It's one of the approved grape varieties for the MONTEFALCO DOC wines but is most famous for the DRY and PASSITO wines of Sangrantino di Montefalco DOCG (see MONTEFALCO DOC) where it's the only variety that can be used.
