San Lucas AVA

VITICULTURAL AREA established in 1987 at the southern end of the Salinas Valley between King City and San Ardo around the town of San Lucas in MONTEREY COUNTY. Daytime temperatures can get quite warm (110? F), while nights are cool. Of the approximately 34,000 acres in this AVA some 8,000 are planted in vineyards. Most of the region comprises vine farms (like the 1,850acre Lockwood Vineyards) that sell grapes to out-of-the-area wineries. Lockwood built a winery and began making its own well-regarded wines in the early 1990s. The most popular varieties planted in the San Lucas AVA are CHARDONNAY, CABERNET SAUVIGNON, MERLOT, and SAUVIGNON BLANC.
