Santa Barbara County

California area just south of SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY and north of Ventura County. This county’s vineyard land has grown enormously during the last two decades. There are now over twenty-five wineries, located in the two major growing areas—SANTA MARIA VALLEY AVA and SANTA YNEZ VALLEY AVA, both of which are north of Santa Barbara. The Santa Maria Valley AVA is the farthest north and actually starts in San Luis Obispo County. The dominant variety is CHARDONNAY, which takes up over 50 percent of the planted vineyard land. It’s followed by CABERNET SAUVIGNON, PINOT NOIR, RIESING, SAUVIGNON BLANC, and CHENIN BLANC.
