Conca de Barberà DO
[KAWN-kuh deh bahr-BEH-rah]

Located north of the PENEDÈS DO in Spain’s CATALONIA area, this small DO was approved in 1989. It’s in the middle of the neighboring DOs of COSTERS DEL SEGRE, PENEDÈS, and TARRAGONA, and has about 15,000 acres of vineyards. White grapes, mainly Viura (MACABEO) and PARELLADA, account for about two-thirds of the crop (down from a decade ago). Traditionally, much of what is grown here is sold off to CAVA DO producers in the Penedès area. The traditional wines in this area are reds and ROSÉS made from Garnacha Tinta (GRENACHE) and Ull de Lebre (TEMPRANILLO). However, things are changing as producers are recognizing the potential for this area. This is particularly true with TORRES, which is producing high-quality wine with CHARDONNAY and CABERNET SAUVIGNON grapes, as well as a blend made with Garnacha (GRENACHE), Garró, Samsó (CARIGNAN), and Monastrell (MOURVÈDRE). Other producers are joining in with blends of Chardonnay and Viura and of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Ull de Lebre (TEMPRANILLO).
