Sardinia; It. Sardegna
[sahr-DIHN-ee-uh (It. sahr-DIHN-yuh)]

An Italian island and wine-producing region located off Italy’s west coast just south of the French island of CORSICA. Sardinia makes a wide variety of wines, most of them quite ordinary. The area has over 100,000 vineyard acres, one DOCG (Vermentino di Gallura), and nineteen DOCs, which comprise about 16 percent of Sardinia’s total wine production. This percentage has increased over the last decade primarily because of the dramatically decreasing production of non-DOC wines. Sardinia’s main DOC is NURAGUS DI CAGLIARI. Other popular DOCs include Cannonau di Sardegna and Monica di Sardegna. The principal red-grape varieties are Cannonau (GRENACHE), Monica, Carignano (CARIGNAN), and Giro. White wines are made from the widely planted Nuragus plus VERMENTINO, Torbato, and VERNACCIA DI ORISTANO.
