Condado de Huelva DO
[kohn-DAH-doh day-WAYL-bah]
DO located northwest of the JEREZ Y MANZANILLA DO in southern Spain. In the past, this area grew grapes that were shipped to the Jerez y Manzanilla area and eventually made into SHERRY; it also produced its own sherrylike wines. Because this style of wine isn’t as popular as it once was, the number of vineyard acres has been reduced, and producers have shifted much of their production to DRY white wines. Zalema is the primary grape used, but it’s losing ground to higher-quality grapes like Palomino Fino (PALOMINO), Garrido Fino, and Moscatel (MUSCAT). Some sherry-style wines are still produced such as Condado Palido (a FINO style) and Condado Viejo (an OLOROSO style).
