Scheurebe
[SHEWR-uhb]

The most widely grown grape in Germany’s RHEINHESSEN and PFALZ regions, this CROSS of RIESLING and SYLVANER was created in 1916 by botanist George Scheu (Rebe means “vine”). Even though this white-wine grape is one of the higher-quality Riesling crossings, it must be fully ripe to achieve its potential. This feature is a drawback for Scheurebe because it requires this variety to be planted on prime vineyard land, which is most often reserved for Riesling. This grape is susceptible to BOTRYTIS CINEREA, making it attractive for the production of DESSERT WINES. Compared to Riesling, Scheurebe produces higher sugar levels, greater YIELDS, and strong ACID levels. Scheurebe wines can be similiar to Rieslings, with an added BLACKCURRANT characteristic. Small amounts of this grape are cultivated in California where it’s used to make VARIETAL WINES.
