Schioppettino
[skyaw-peh-TEE-noh]

A red-wine grape grown in Italy's FRIULI-VENEZIA GIULIA region, particularly in the DOC of COLLI ORIENTALI DEL FRIULI. Schioppettino, also known as Ribolla Nera, was on the verge of extinction when it was resurrected by the Ronchi di Cialla estate. Since then other producers have followed suit, and this variety has slowly been gaining a following. Schioppettino produces DRY, intense wines with a flavor suggestive of wild blackberries.
