Côtes de Provence AC
[koht duh praw-VAHNSS]

The largest APPELLATION in France’s PROVENCE region, which covers some 45,000 acres. One section stretches from Toulon on the Mediterranean, eastward along the coast to above Saint Tropez. Another reaches from Toulon inland in a northeastern direction, while a third section heads west from Toulon toward Marseille. ROSÉ is the dominant wine produced in this AC, followed by red wines and a tiny amount of white. The red and rosé wines are made from CABERNET SAUVIGNON, CINSAUT, GRENACHE, MOURVÈDRE, SYRAH, and others, while the whites are made from CLAIRETTE, Rolle, SÉMILLON, and Ugni Blanc (TREBBIANO). Even though the quality of Côtes de Provence AC wines varies considerably, they appear to be generally improving, primarily because of increased planting of high-quality grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre, and Syrah.
