Côtes du Vivarais VDQS
[koht deu vee-vah-RAY]

A VDQS area that produces LIGHT, easy-to-drink, mostly red wines. Côtes du Vivarais is located in the southern RHÔNE, northeast of CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE. The grape varieties used for red and ROSÉ wines are those popular throughout the Rhône—CARIGNAN, CINSAUT, GAMAY, GRENACHE, and SYRAH—as well as CABERNET SAUVIGNON, which is now also being planted. Increasing use of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon is resulting in a more full-bodied (see BODY), full-flavored style. The area’s small amount of white wine is made from BOURBOULENC, CLAIRETTE, GRENACHE BLANC, and Ugni Blanc (TREBBIANO).
