Southeastern New England AVA
Large VITICULTURAL AREA established in 1984 covering 1,875,200 acres in CONNECTICUT, MASSACHUSETTS, and RHODE ISLAND. It starts around Plymouth, Massachusetts, and spreads south and west through Rhode Island and into Connecticut, ending around New Haven. The various bodies of water (like Long Island Sound and Rhode Island Sound) that run along the southern edge of the AVA moderate the region’s temperatures, making the climate comparable to the cooler growing regions in France, such as BURGUNDY and the LOIRE. There are over twenty-five wineries in the region growing HYBRIDS like VIDAL BLANC, SEYVAL BLANC, CHANCELLOR, CAYUGA, MARÉCHAL FOCH, and AURORA. VITIS VINIFERA varieties grown here include CHARDONNAY, CABERNET SAUVIGNON, PINOT NOIR, MERLOT, CABERNET FRANC, and RIESLING.
