Some Things You May Not Already Know about Beaujolais Nouveau

Posted 11/17/2008 at 10:18 PM by Cathy

When Beaujolais Nouveau is released this week – the third Thursday in November, according to French law – it will be an opportunity to sample the most famous vin de primeur, and an opportunity to catch up on some trends you may not already know about this Gamay-based wine:

• In an effort to reduce shipping weight (and the wine's carbon footprint), several labels are bottling their Beaujolais Nouveau in recyclable plastic.

• This year Georges Duboeuf produced a private label blend of Beaujolais Nouveau for Whole Foods Market Inc. that comes in a plastic bottle.

• Some critics think Beaujolais Nouveau benefits from being left for a few weeks to recover from bottle shock, suggesting that the wine be drunk in the following spring rather than November.

• The Beaujolais AOC was established in 1937.

• Counterparts to Beaujolais Nouveau in other countries include vino novello in Italy and vino nuevo in Spain.

Cathy Huyghe writes about drinking wine every day in the Boston area. She finds the quirky characters, the after-hours events, and the surprising stories that make up Boston's vibrant local wine scene. But no matter where she is, what she's doing, or who she's with, she mostly just wants to drink the stuff.

Her first restaurant gig was at Chez Panisse, when she knocked on the kitchen's back door and asked if she could work there. She's also worked for Jean-Pierre Vigato in Paris and Thomas Keller in Las Vegas. She went to graduate school at Harvard (twice), and her writing has run in Boston magazine, the Boston Globe, the Washington Post, Edible Boston, and on Nevada Public Radio and Grist.org.
