Wines That Deserve More LovePosted 01/11/2008 at 10:44 PM by AndrewHere at Zachy’s we’ve been debating which region is the most underrated wine country. My vote is for the Adriatic Coast of Italy -- there are fantastic wines being produced in The Marche, Abruzzi, Molise and Puglia. The Marche is the most diverse region of the bunch, producing fantastic whites and reds such as Verdicchio dei Castelli dei Jesi, by Sartarelli and Bucci; Rosso Conero based on Montepluciano by Monte Schiavo, and Lanari, Rosso Piceno based on Sangiovese by Laila and Velenosi; and then some fantastic Marche Rosso like the Camerte by La Monacesa (Merlot and Sangiovese) and Chaos by Le Terrazze (Syrah and Montepluciano.) All and all, wines from The Marche deliver high impact and youthful approachability right of the bat. But I don’t want to shortchange Abruzzo, Molise and Puglia. Abruzzo is one of the most historic wine regions of Italy and is the benchmark for Montepluciano. Emidio Pepe and Valentini produce some of the most sought after Monte Plucianos on the market, but there are numerous other producers making great wine such as Illuminati and Maria Cvetic just to name a few. Also, the Trebbiano produced in Abruzzo can be very clean and refreshing; or rich, round and full of texture making it a great alternative to chardonnay. Molise is producing some great reds based on Montepluciano and Aglianico and Puglia is becoming known for its Uva di Troia, Primitivo and Negroamaro-based reds. Check out the Rivera's Il Falcone Castel del Monte or their Primitivo and the Nero from Conti Zecca. Whether you are a Cab drinker, Zin lover, Brunello collector or Amarone aficionado these are 4 regions that you should not miss.
