Margaux vs. Chateau Margaux?

Posted 01/24/2008 at 10:06 AM by Ben

Chateau d'Issan is classified as a Margaux. So what the heck is Chateau Margaux?

Both are a first rate wineries, located in the Margaux appellation, making outstanding wines from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Chateau d'Issan is classified as a third growth, while Chateau Margaux is classified as a first growth, which puts it higher on the Bordeaux pecking order.

Chateau Margaux's name has spilled over into the entire commune of Margaux, which is why you'll see that some Margaux chateaux (but not Chateau d'Issan) really playing up the connection, putting the appellation "Margaux" in big bold letters on their labels, sometimes bigger than the name of the Chateau. Being Margaux wines, such bottlings are usually very good, but just make sure that when order Chateau Margaux, your waiter doesn't try to slip you a cheaper substitute.  It's happened to me.
