Last night's French Wine Society tasting of the wines of the Margaux and Pauillac communes of Bordeaux revealed a rising star in the Margaux pecking order -- Chateau Rauzan-Segla. It trounced my sentimental favorite, Chateau Palmer, and and also beat out a number of well regarded wines from Pauillac.

Tonight at Stir, Barbara Lynch's demonstration kitchen in the South End, a renaissance man named Check Draghi led ten very privileged guests through his version of a mini rare and unusual wine list. It was an exercise in carpe diem: enjoy these wines because you'll probably never drink them again. All the wines were Italian in origin (like Draghi himself), all were completely unknown to me before tonight, and all had histories that are deeply obscure and convoluted.

Nobody balances oak with fruit better than the winemakers of Bordeaux. Tasting wines from the 2004 vintage of the prestigiuos Margaux region, Ben Giliberti samples two wines that are on two opposite ends of the oak spectrum. One wine shows lots of oak, one very little, but they're both delicious and both perfect examples of classic Margaux style.

By Nancy EnglishThe right combination of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and Alfrocheiro can cast a spell, as I discovered at Atasca, the Portuguese restaurant at 50 Hampshire Street in Cambridge. With its heavy brocade of tannins and deep dark fruit, the first sip of 2003 Casa De Santar Reserva, from the Dão region of Portugal, drew all of my attention. The thick wine nudged me sweetly down to earth, settling over my shoulders with the weight of a lead x-ray blanket at the dentist's office. I'd f ...

I know ArtBar is in a hotel lobby (at the Royal Sonesta on Edwin Land Boulevard in Cambridge).I know it's tiny tiny (a few two-tops, a few more tables for four, seating at the bar, and a communal high table for eight or so).I know these places normally get a bad rap.But ArtBar is tastefully done (the art, the bar, and the food). And the wine – I chose the 2003 Kendall Jackson Hawkeye Cabernet Sauvignon – is awesome. What more could I want?Besides, isn't it time to rethink hotel lobby restaurants ...

It was as though my subtlety gene had gone into recession.I was sitting at the bar at I Trulli, an enoteca on East 27th Street in New York, with three glasses of three different reds in front of me. And, try as I might, I just couldn't tease out much in the way of absolute distinction between the three.Fortunately, if it's one thing restaurant people appreciate in their guests, it's effort. The bartender noticed my struggle with the "Earthy and Elegant" flight she'd recommended: Rosso Piceno 2005 ...

Few events in the wine-drinking universe are more satisfying than witnessing the breakdown of a stereotype. Stereotypes – such as "Spanish reds are all hot, spicy, and alcoholic" – probably do have some germ of truth to them but for the most part they're clichéd overgeneralizations which, among other things, is just bad form.Spain has made serious strides in recent years to overcome its unfortunate wine reputation, a reputation that ran deeper than just that its wines were all hot, spicy, and al ...

By Beth O'BrienThe Lower Falls Wine Company of Newton hosted Giuseppe Vajra, of the Vajra family-owned and operated winery in Piedmont, in its tasting room Wednesday evening. The tasting room is dominated by blond wood and nearly floor-to-ceiling mullioned windows that overlook busy Route 16, but the pace and appeal of the Vajra wines turned all eyes indoors.Vajra poured samples of his winery's renowned Dolcetto, then two Barberas, two Barolos, and a Moscato. Sampling each wine in turn allowed g ...

It's tricky. There are hundreds of nuances -- in personalities, in textures, in appearance. There are factors beyond your control – temperature, availability, preparation.Still, we try.Turns out that talking about food and wine pairings – especially in the realm of dessert, which was the topic a few nights ago at Miel Brasserie Provençale's Tuesday Tasting – is a l ...

Over the years it has become my habit to cruise right past the red Burgundy aisle in favor of Bordeaux at the local wine shop. It's not that I have found red Burgundy any less profound than Bordeaux on a glass by glass basis, but because Burgundy is more confusing, more inconsistent from vintage to vintage, and more expensive than Bordeaux. But that's changing.

Age, it turns out, does matter. Not that this comes as a surprise to anyone – in wine, in technology, in love – but when the truth of it resounds so powerfully twice in the same week, as it did for me this past week, you tend to take notice, especially since in both cases I was tasting relatively young wines from Napa. Napa has its age-worthy wines – most notably, in my opinion, Clos du Val – but given Napa's climate-blessed ability to produce wines of consistent measure, variations in vintage ar ...

Test and Image by Austyn Ellese MayfieldGood wine is always in fashion. But for some, pairing wine with fashion is an even more rapturous idea.Just ask Drew Payette, a recent graduate of Rhode Island School of Design and creator of Gee Whiz jewelry, based in Dedham. Payette recently hosted a holiday wine tasting and jewelry trunk show, with jazzy renditions of carols playing in the background and fresh poinsettias setting a festively chic atmosphere. Guests were invited to taste nine different w ...

Not with their fresh ricotta dumplings, herbed spaghetti squash, tomato sauce, and shaved fennel. No, not easy at all.But they do not make it hard, either, to sidle up for a glass or two. By Beth O'BrienRather than wince when my children propose a family trip to the packy, I congratulate myself for having such perceptive offspring. But that's only because the packy they're referring to is John Recco's Discount Liquors in Newton. The set up of the store, the conviviality of the staff, and Recco's vision for a better way to sell wine combine to serve wine drinkers of all stripes. And their children. (I'm not sure, but that may have more to do with the Tootsie Pops at the checkout.)T ...

The Butcher Shop's list of wines by the glass is, arguably, the best in town. Okay, I admit I'd have a soft spot for anyone who offers me a 2006 Trimbach Muscat, by the glass or the bottle or even the magnum, for that matter. But which restaurants' wine lists, other than those like The Butcher Shop that Cat Silirie outfits, can boast such a thing?None, at least none that I know of. Silirie gets wines no one else in town gets, and she isn't stingy about sharing them. The Trimbach Muscat is a case ...

How does someone who's 25 years old come to be Wine and Beverage Director for Jody Adams at Rialto? In other words, how did you get the job?If you are asking me I would say I was lucky! But most people who know me believe that I have depth of knowledge on wine, particularly Italian wine. Jody is a luminary chef and restaurateur, she saw a passion and drive in me that I think spoke to her. She is also a very smart entrepreneur and she saw my age as a huge asset, which many people might have not. ...

It's official. Robert Parker has just declared 2005 to be "the greatest [Bordeaux] vintage produced during my 30-year career." That stunning pronouncement is not what's causing the buzz on his website's bulletin board [eRobertParker.com; free registration required] and, undoubtedly, among Bordeaux aficionados around the world, however.
