Wine for Breakfast, and the Perils of High-Alcohol Pinot Noir from Sonoma

Posted 03/22/2009
A local restaurateur invited me to a small tasting this week with a sales rep from one of the major distributors. We'd be trying wines from two vineyards, both in California, from primarily two varietals – Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. And it was going to be at 10:30 in the morning.Wine for breakfast! My favorite way (almost) to start the day.It was, at least, until they started pouring the Pinots from Sonoma. Something was off. It wasn't that I was expecting the Pinots from Sonoma to taste like Pi ...   More >

Tony Coturri (Walt Whitman) and Frisky Wines at Formaggio, Cambridge

Posted 01/27/2009
When I walked into Formaggio a few weeks ago for the tasting hosted by winemaker Tony Coturri, I thought I had mistakenly walked into a reading by Walt Whitman. Coturri looks, alarmingly at first, so much like the iconic portrait of Whitman – think long long gray beard and penetrating but kindly eyes – that you half expect to find verses from Whitman's Leaves of Grass printed on the back labels of Coturri's wines. In reality the liaison doesn't go that far, though residue of Whitman's transcenden ...   More >

By Liz RosenbaumThe day before Halloween, both BRIX wine shop locations in Boston welcomed Hirsch Vineyards for a tasting of two of their finest 2006 Pinot Noirs. At BRIX on Broad, owner David Hirsch poured while his daughter, Jasmine, did the same at BRIX in the South End. Jasmine Hirsh, who heads the sales and marketing side of the business, breezily asked customers entering the shop if they would like to try some wine. (As if this were just any wine!) Punching the Time Card, Morning of Day One: San Francisco and Sonoma

Posted 08/30/2008
6 a.m.The people who will spend the day working the stands at San Francisco's farmer's market are still setting up. Things are not ready. Bins are half-full or empty. Makeshift tables still have that church-hall look about them. Yards of fabric, soon to cover all sorts of unsightly scaffolds underneath, still sit folded into neat squares. It's staging time. Unmarked white vans and trucks back up and over the Embarcadero curb. Doors open, some up and some out, and teams of workers unload and unpa ...   More >

A three-man band tuned up in the bar area while we waited for the Red, White and Bleu wine and cheese tasting to start tonight at Les Zygomates. The band's riffs and starts. The brick design detail at the bar. The weathered-by-heavy-traffic hardwood floor. The wine bottle displays stepping up the side walls. Strawberries were ready for picking today, for the first time this year, at The Food Project's farm in Lincoln. We went to pick up this week's CSA share (CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture), and I for one was tickled to see "One pint of strawberries" enumerated on the chalkboard's list of pick-your-own options this week.Strawberry picking is an old early-summer ritual in my house. Wine Riot! A Chance to Learn About Wine, Sans Snobbery

An event in Boston aimed to topple that image, appealing to a younger crowd eager to educate themselves about wine without the added attitude. The Wine Riot, held April 17th and 18th at The Cyclorama in Boston's South End, sought to bring a casual, irreverent attitude to wine tasting and education. Screw That: Debating the Highs and Lows of Stelvin Closures. A.K.A. Screwcaps

Posted 04/20/2009
By Adam CentamoreThe sight of a bottle of red Bordeaux with a screw cap can be a little discombobulating, almost upsetting to some wine connoisseurs. What self-respecting winemaker would allow a top vintage from their cellar to sport such an ordinary appendage? The answer is more and more of them. And for those who vilify the tidy, efficient aluminum cap, a vinicultural day of reckoning is coming. The Stelvin closure, as it is officially called, has been a point of contention since it first appe ...   More >

This week, on a visit to a local Legal Seafoods, I was surprised to find one of the best values I've seen lately on a wine list.It didn't have to do with a Thanksgiving-week special. And it wasn't because Legal somehow overlooks the notoriously sky-high upcharge on alcohol that restaurants normally pass onto their customers. It was because of Legal's take on a long-used technique called the wine flight.
