Once in a while you get a completely unexpected crash course on the biography of a particular winemaker. Some common detail (often unrelated to wine) catches your eye and you're hooked. He might be from your hometown. She might own the same breed of dog as you. He might have once lived in the same apartment building as your second cousin twice removed. Before you know it, you're listening to the rest of the winemaker's story with the kind of rapt concentration that, applied properly, would have ...

When I lived in California, the room that I rented was right around the corner from one of the most famous cheese shops in the world. At the time, I was an unpaid intern at one of the most famous restaurants in the world, so I didn't exactly have a huge budget for luxuries like cheese. I was never really a big cheese fan anyway, so this didn't faze me much.

'Tis the season. For wine. Everywhere you look wine shops all over Boston are hosting their spring-time grand tastings. The "grand" is what differentiates these tastings from shops' regular weekly events. Each shop brings together a number distributors and importers – anywhere from four to ten of them – who each set up individual tables to showcase six to eight of their wines. In other words, your regular Jane or Joe can walk into a single shop's grand tasting and sample some 20 to 80 wines. That' ...

Okay, I admit it. When I'm shopping for wine I do not often pick up a bottle that's under $10.But this one, a 2005 Bonizio Sangiovese, was from the Maremma district of Italy in southern Tuscany. The Maremma is one of the hottest properties in the wine world today; an acre in the Maremma is going for more than some of the most reputable acreage in France. This one, this 2005 Bonizio from the Cecchi winery, was also made from Sangiovese grapes, which is a varietal I haven't been associating with th ...

By Julia TimakhovichFamous chefs and winemakers who visit our city are usually guarded from the public, protected by PR, assistants, and expensive entry tickets to fancy events. Then there are very famous food industry folks, those masterminds you wouldn't mind paying to meet, who wander by on rare occasions without much marketing or warning. That was the case last Thursday at BRIX on Broad, who hosted a free book signing and wine tasting event with chef and restaurateur Lidia Bastianich.BRIX on B ...

(Originally published on April 23, 2008)It wasn't that my mind needed to be changed about Italian reds, exactly. I liked them just fine, especially when I wanted something that's generally assertive and powerful on the palate, something that's bold and full-bodied, something that hits me like a ton of bricks but in a good way."Finesse" and "elegant," in other words, were not two of the first words that came to mind when I thought of Italian red wines. Not, that is, until tonight.Tonight I met Pao ...

By Amy McCoyWhich of these wines goes with ricotta gnocchi in rabbit ragu? One with great body, mellowness, plums, cherries, and blackberries? (Calabrian Cabernet)Or one with ripe cherries, tar, cinnamon and fresh rose petals? (Nebbiolo)Or one that's full-bodied, with fresh raspberries, cherries, and a smooth texture? (Rosso Piceno Superiore)We went with the Rosso Piceno Superiore, from Le Torri in the region of Le Marche, which had just been added to the menu two weeks before at Trattoria della ...

Some people came to the St. Francis wine dinner at Legal Seafoods tonight because they always come to wine dinners here. I don't blame them – six wines and five courses at far less than you'd pay if you ordered off the menu. It's one of the best deals going, anywhere in Boston. Some people came to the St. Francis wine dinner because they know the wines and wanted more of them, preferably paired with Legal Seafoods' food. Who could blame them? And then there were the people who came because their f ...

It was as though my subtlety gene had gone into recession.I was sitting at the bar at I Trulli, an enoteca on East 27th Street in New York, with three glasses of three different reds in front of me. And, try as I might, I just couldn't tease out much in the way of absolute distinction between the three.Fortunately, if it's one thing restaurant people appreciate in their guests, it's effort. The bartender noticed my struggle with the "Earthy and Elegant" flight she'd recommended: Rosso Piceno 2005 ...
