Suzanne Pirret does not follow many of the rules. You'd know this if you happened to see her noon-time cooking demonstration at Northeastern University yesterday. No one actually cooks wearing a dress like that, just like no one is allowed to make chocolate cookies like that that have the consistency of fudge, are rolled in sugar, topped with sea salt, and then dunked – as Pirret advises at the end of her no-ingredient-list-only-prose recipe – in a glass of 2004 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico fro ...

Sometimes it feels as if everything has already been said or written about Robert Mondavi. Understand, he was already an icon when I was trying to get into the wine industry 25 years ago. It would be easy to talk about what a tireless and ...

Interview by Vivian Ku, Guest ContributorHow did you become interested in wine?I have always been interested in wine, it was never a mystery or taboo in my family to have a glass with dinner, but professionally, I never considered a career in wine until I spent a year in Adelaide, Australia pursuing a Master's degree in Gastronomy. Lincoln, Massachusetts received four inches of rain today.Sounds like a lot, and it is. To deal with the downpour most of us pull on our raincoats, open our umbrellas, and go about our business. But it isn't quite so easy for Kip Kumler, owner and winemaker of Turtle Creek Winery in Lincoln. It's even less easy for his vines.Kumler plants only vinis vinifera on his property – think Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel – which are particularly susceptible to fungal disease caused by large amounts of ...

Why is it that everywhere I go, from a kid's baseball game to a black-tie event, the conversations with either acquaintances or total strangers always comes back around to wine? The floodgates open once I mention my work – I'm a wine journalist and lifelong student of all things wine. 'How did you learn so much about wine?' 'What's your favorite wine?' or 'You've got the best job in the world,' are the common responses. It often amuses and gratifies me that I'll be chatting with my Dentist or my mother's Cardiologist, or even the CEO of a major firm on a plane ride, and once my profession is revealed, it's the only topic of conversation. And believe me, I'm not one who favors talking about myself. What I do like is that wine talk brings down any barrier to communication since I generally end of demystifying some aspect of wine, and darn it, I get a little respect.

Ever try a really amazing, new wine somewhere around town, then go so far as to try ordering a few extra bottles of it online, only to find that the winery doesn't ship to Massachusetts? Or, worse, that it doesn't have any distribution whatsoever in the Bay State, meaning that even your local wine shop can't their hands on it?You wouldn't be alone in your frustration. But, whether you've experienced this rigmarole or not, it's helpful as a Massachusetts consumer of wine to know the ins and outs ...

It's here and it isn't easy. Only the most dedicated writers are practicing it. Of course, I am referring to the latest improvement in our industry: Biodynamic wine-writing. Biodynamic wine-writing is far more involved and difficult than the more common or "standard" writing associated with the industrialized production of wine descriptions. Biodynamic wine-writing shares obvious similarities with organic wine-writing. Both are sustainable and neither allows the use of man made scores. After all, a score such ...

In a great vintage like 2005, the so-called second label wines put out by many prestigious Bordeaux chateau can be great bargains. Second label wines come from the same vineyards as as in the states first wine, but typically costs about half as much. However, the better ones are closer in style and quality to the more expensive Grand Vin than you might imagine based strictly on the price difference.
