Suzanne Pirret does not follow many of the rules. You'd know this if you happened to see her noon-time cooking demonstration at Northeastern University yesterday. No one actually cooks wearing a dress like that, just like no one is allowed to make chocolate cookies like that that have the consistency of fudge, are rolled in sugar, topped with sea salt, and then dunked – as Pirret advises at the end of her no-ingredient-list-only-prose recipe – in a glass of 2004 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico fro ...   More >

Four Inches of Rain in One Day: Why That Matters to Pinot Noir from Turtle Creek Winery, Lincoln

Posted 09/06/2008
Lincoln, Massachusetts received four inches of rain today.Sounds like a lot, and it is. To deal with the downpour most of us pull on our raincoats, open our umbrellas, and go about our business. But it isn't quite so easy for Kip Kumler, owner and winemaker of Turtle Creek Winery in Lincoln. It's even less easy for his vines.Kumler plants only vinis vinifera on his property – think Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel – which are particularly susceptible to fungal disease caused by large amounts of ...   More >

Laura's Line on Wine

Posted 07/28/2008
Why is it that everywhere I go, from a kid's baseball game to a black-tie event, the conversations with either acquaintances or total strangers always comes back around to wine? The floodgates open once I mention my work – I'm a wine journalist and lifelong student of all things wine. 'How did you learn so much about wine?' 'What's your favorite wine?' or 'You've got the best job in the world,' are the common responses. It often amuses and gratifies me that I'll be chatting with my Dentist or my mother's Cardiologist, or even the CEO of a major firm on a plane ride, and once my profession is revealed, it's the only topic of conversation. And believe me, I'm not one who favors talking about myself. What I do like is that wine talk brings down any barrier to communication since I generally end of demystifying some aspect of wine, and darn it, I get a little respect.   More >

Sustainable Writing...Improved

Posted 05/06/2008
It's here and it isn't easy. Only the most dedicated writers are practicing it. Of course, I am referring to the latest improvement in our industry: Biodynamic wine-writing. Biodynamic wine-writing is far more involved and difficult than the more common or "standard" writing associated with the industrialized production of wine descriptions. Biodynamic wine-writing shares obvious similarities with organic wine-writing. Both are sustainable and neither allows the use of man made scores. After all, a score such ...   More >
